The New Year's Whisper event was a relatively quick activity (lasting 3 days) at the beginning of the 2021 New Year's Celebration activities.
Each player was able to send either a New Year Card (Gift) or a Snowball to one of their fellow players. Snowballs and Gifts/Cards can be sent to any player on the field, not just those in their corps.
A snowball icon and a card icon can be seen to the right on the player's info box:
Clicking on the card icon allowed the player to send a simple message to the other player.
Clicking on the snowball allowed a player to "throw a snowball" at the other player.
Each player was able to send up to 5 free items of either type (summed together, not 5 of each) per day. If a player ran out of free items they could purchase more at 100 gold per item.
Players were ranked by how many of each they received (separate rankings) and rewards were given based upon how they ranked.

Rewards were also provided according to how many gifts and/or snowballs each player sent over the course of the event (see above - even though the titles say "Send X gift(s)", sending snowballs does count as well).

There isn't really a strategy to this event - players that coordinate with other players and ask for gifts generally do well.
